ارول، جورج Orwell, George (جورج اورول) نام مستعار، (نام واقعی اریک آرتوربلر Eric Arthur Blair رماننویس انگلیسی (1903-1950) ارول در هندوستان از خانوادهای «انگلیسی-هندی» زاده شد. پدرش کارمند اداره کشف قاچاق بود. جورج تحصیلات خود را در کالج اتون Eton در انگلستان آغاز کرد. در 1922 پس از خروج از کالج در دستگاه مستعمرانی بیرمانی در هندوچین به کار مشغول شد. در 1928، از شغل خود استعفا داد تا به کار ادبی بپردازد. در دوره کنارهگیری آثار نویسندگانی چون جیمز جویس، تی. اس. الیوت و دی. اچ. لارنس را مطالعه کرد که در او اثر بسیاری باقی گذاشت. در بازگشت به اروپا مدتی در فرانسه و لندن با فقر و دشواری زیست. خاطرات این سفر را در کتاب “تهیدستی در پاریس و لندن” Down and out in Paris and Landon (1933) وصف کرده است. در همین سال داستان “روزهای برمه” Burmese Days را منتشر کرد، داستانی خیالانگیز از کشمکشهای نژادی در آسیا. ارول در 1936 به روزنامهنگاری روی آورد، سپس در جنگهای داخلی اسپانیا، در ارتش انقلابی شرکت کرد و به سختی مجروح شد و هنگامی که قتل عام مردم را به دست کمونیستها؛ که با استبداد مطلق، قدرت را به دست گرفته بودند، مشاهده کرد، بسیار نگران گشت و ادراک خود از سوسیالیسم را در کتاب “به یاد کاتولونیا” Homage to Catalonia در 1938 وصف کرد. از آن پس ایمان و عقاید سیاسی وی تزلزل یافت و تحول روحیش در آثار این دوره منعکس گشت از آن جمله است: “قلعه حیوانات”Animal Farm (1945)، داستانی خیالانگیز و استعاری با هجوی بسیار تند و شدید درباره استبداد. “هزار و نهصد و هشتاد و چهار” Ninteen-Eighty Four (1949) که سرخوردگی نویسنده و رؤیای غمانگیز و پیشگویی وحشتناکی را از دموکراسی آینده پیش چشم میگذارد. ارول در 1939 کتاب “به دنبال هوا” Coming up for Air را انتشار داد که به زندگی واقعی و تحول روحی او و دورهای که در دستگاه شهربانی خدمت میکرد، بستگی نزدیک دارد. “شیر و اونیکورن” The Lion and the Unicorn (1941) مقالهای است درباره سوسیالیسم و توصیف کشور انگلستان در دوره کشمکشها. “دختر کشیش” The Clergyman’s Daughter (1934) و “جاده به سوی اسکله ویگان” The Road to Wigan Pier (1937) هم از کارهای همین دوره اوست. ارول در طی جنگ جهانی دوم با بنگاه سخن پراکنی بریتانیا BBC و از 1943 با روزنامههای کارگری مانند تریبون Tribune و آبزرور Observer همکاری کرد. در 1949 به کلی از جامعه کناره گرفت و در انزوای کامل به سر برد و سرانجام به علت ابتلا به بیماری سل در لندن درگذشت.
ارول چنانکه خود میگوید از شغل خویش در بیرمانی اگرچه مهم نبود، تجربه فراوان به دست آورد و برای محکوم ساختن شیوه حکومت استعماری از هرنکته کوچک سود برد. در نظر ارول رماننویس عالم علم اخلاق است و از اینروست که او خود راه سیاسی خویش را یافت، راه طغیان بر ضد بیرحمیها و سنگدلیهای طرفداران فرانکو و استالین را. اقدام ارول در میان نویسندگان نسل خود نظیر نداشت. وی نسل خود را وامیداشت که ابتدا درباره مسائل به طول عمیق بیندیشند، پس از آن به نقد ادبی و سیاسی بپردازند.

تاریخ امتحان آلفاتست دانشگاه پلی تکنیک تورین
